Fostering in Kendal
Excel Fostering are looking for people who have space in their hearts and homes to start fostering in Kendal. By becoming a foster parent and joining our North West team, you’ll be helping children and young people in your community.
There is a national shortage of foster carers, though the demand for them is ever-growing. That’s why Excel Fostering, as an independent foster care agency, works with local authorities across Northern England – such as Cumbria County Council, the local authority responsible for fostering in Kendal. We support these authorities by providing high-quality foster parents when the county’s own roster of carers isn’t large enough to meet demand. If you decide to become a foster parent, you’ll be providing a vital service and a loving home to children and young people in need.
So what do you need to take on fostering placements? To begin with, you will need to be over the age of 21 and in good health. More importantly, however, you need to have a spare room in your home that is suitable for use as a bedroom. Having a secure and private space to relax and feel safe in has proven to improve fostering outcomes across the board and so is an essential part of foster care. Beyond this, your age, gender, faith, race or whether you identify as LGBTQ has no impact on your ability to offer the love and care needed to provide quality fostering services and so has no affect on your ability to become a member of the Excel family.
Once you apply, you’ll be visited in your home by your assigned supervising social worker. This initial informal meeting allows us to get to know you better and marks the start of the fostering assessment process. This process normally lasts between three to four months and is concluded by a meeting with an impartial fostering panel. During this period you’ll also be invited to attend one of our fostering skills training courses.
Fostering is a full-time job, so it’s important to know it’ll offer you the financial security you need while you have placements. All of our carers receive a competitive weekly allowance, the value of which varies depending on where you’re fostering and what sort of foster care services you’re providing. More specialist services, such as sibling groups or parent and child fostering for example, offer higher weekly rates than more traditional long and short-term foster placements. This money is there, not only to help cover the cost of caring for your foster placement but also as a reward for the dedication, time and love you have invested in your new role.
