Fostering in Fleetwood
Excel Fostering is a small independent agency that is a placement provider of fostering services in Lancashire, and one of the areas where there is a serious shortage of carers is in Fleetwood. This is why we are actively seeking caring, dedicated individuals who have a spare bedroom, are 21 years old or older, and who are ready to make a real career change.
As an independent foster care agency, we work with the local authority of the Lancashire County Council. There is a shortage of carers in the UK in general with about 7,000 placements for which there are no carers. One of the reasons that local authorities began to turn to independent agencies is that they were no longer able to meet the demand for foster homes.
If you are thinking about becoming part of our team, there are a few requirements. As mentioned, you need to be at least 21 years old and have a spare bedroom. It’s a proven fact that when children and young people in care have their own private and secure space, they have a better chance for positive outcomes. As for other requirements, good health, patience, and a sense of humour are all needed. Beyond this, your age, race, gender, religion or being LGBTQ, have no impact on your ability to join our foster care team.
We make the application process easy. The first step in the application process is a visit from your supervising social worker. The first meeting will be an informal visit to you in your home. There will be several more visits and interviews as we get to know each other.
The assessment process takes around three or four months and your supervising social worker will be with you every step of the way to provide help, advice and support. As well as the meeting with the social worker, you will also join one of our fostering skills training courses. These are workshops that are part of our education and training provision for all new potential carers. It’s how we are able to make sure you have everything you need before taking on your first placement.
The final step in the process is a meeting with an impartial panel. The panel will assess your suitability as a registered foster parent and make a recommendation to us based on their assessment. We review the assessment and Excel is the entity that will make the final decision.
Foster carers receive a competitive weekly allowance as well as income tax benefits. The total amount of the allowance depends on where you’re providing care and which of the many types of service you provide. This money is to cover any additional costs, but also as a reward for the love and dedication our carers display in their roles.
