Fostering in Wigan
Excel Fostering are looking for caring and dedicated individuals to start fostering in Wigan. By joining our foster care team you’ll be helping local children and young people continue to grow and develop despite having to leave their family home.
Excel Fostering is an independent foster care agency. That means we work with local authorities across the North West, such as Wigan Council, and provide high-quality foster carers when the local authority’s own roster of carers isn’t large enough to meet the ever-grown demand for caring foster families around the area. There is a growing disparity between the number of available foster families and the number of children and young people in need of a supportive new foster home. If you choose to become a foster carer, then you’ll be helping to change that trend.
All you need to start your foster care journey is to be in good health, over the age of 21, and most importantly, have a spare bedroom in your house. This is the most important part as, in every case, a private and secure space where a child or young person can relax and feel safe improves fostering outcomes. Beyond this, neither your age, your gender, your faith, your race nor whether you identify as part of the LGBTQ community impacts your ability to foster with Excel Fostering. Everyone is welcome to join our team.
When you apply with us, you’ll be assigned a supervising social worker who will support and advise you throughout the fostering assessment process. They’ll visit you in your home for an informal chat so we can get to know you better. The total assessment process normally lasts up to four months and ends with a meeting with an impartial fostering panel. The panel will make a recommendation as to your suitability as a foster parent, though the final decision to make you a fully registered foster carer remains with Excel Fostering.
We invite all of our prospective foster parents to attend our fostering training courses. These educational services are available to all new applicants to ensure that our carers have all the skills on hand to meet the needs of their foster placements.
As a fully registered carer, you’ll be eligible for a competitive weekly allowance. The value of this payment depends on the type of foster care provided, for example, specialist care services such as parent and child or emergency fostering will offer a larger allowance than the more usual short or long-term fostering placements. All carers will also be eligible for income tax benefits. These weekly payments are there to help cover the costs of the new addition to your family, and also as a reward for the dedication you’ve invested in your new career.
