Book Lovers Day

9th August, 2021

Book Lovers Day is celebrated on 9th August every year. For this one day, people are advised to put away their smartphones and any technological distractions and to pick up a book to read!

We asked staff for some book recommendations in celebration of Book Lovers Day this year. We received books recommendations for foster carers and potential foster carers and recommendations for children too. Staff even told us what they liked to read as children.

A book for foster children recommended by a young person in foster care

Mostly the Honest Truth by Jody J Little is a book that has been recommended by one of our young people for other children in foster care, who said:

"A book that I have that I think will also help a lot of children. This is about a girl, she is 12 and enrolled in foster care and she says a lot about her feelings. She tells a lie to her social worker so she can go back to her dad."

Books some of our young people have enjoyed reading

Other books our young people enjoy include all the Harry Potter series and all of David Walliams books too.

Books that our staff enjoyed reading as children

Karen’s favourite book as a child was George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.
"I liked this book because of all the potions he made and what he would put into them. I used to love making potions as a child."

Alison’s favourite book as a child was The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Now she’s an expert on Zog as her grandson's favourite book is Zog and the Flying Doctors.

Helen loved the BFG! She stayed up all night to read it. Helen is enjoying reading David Walliams to her children at the moment.

Francesca’s favourite book as a child was called Teddy's Trucks. It was about animals who fixed cars and trucks.

Emma loved The Magic Faraway Tree. She mostly liked the characters Moonface & Saucepan in the book. Debbie also loved the Faraway Tree as a child and now reads it to her son.

Chris’s favourite book as a child was Captain Underpants because it made him laugh.

Louise enjoyed all Roald Dahl books, but her favourite was George's marvellous medicine.  Her favourite line:
"... she had a mouth that was all puckered up like a bull dog's bottom."

We love hearing about books you’ve enjoyed or that have helped you so that we can share these with others. Please email communication@capstonefostercare.co.uk if you have any you would like to share with us for future recommendations.
