The Assessment

Starting The Assessment

Once you application to become a foster care is accepted you will start an assessement process, know as a Form F assessment. This assessment will help us to identify whether you and your partner, if you're making a joint application, are suitable to be approved as a foster carer and to agree the types of fostering you will be approved for.

Throughout the assessment you will work alongside us to help us record, in the Form F, why you would be a good foster carer and how your current family and the environment you live in will help to improve the lives of children and young people.

There will be a number of planned meetings in your home or via an online video chat that will provide the opportunity to collect and share information. It will give you the opportunity to find out more about being a foster carer and the role you will play in the futures for children and young people.

Checks and references

  • We will need to carry out a number of checks and will require some references.
  • You will require a medical check at your local GP and the cost of that will be paid by Excel Fostering. If you’re making a joint application, then all parties will require this check. This will help us understand whether you and/or your partner are fit and health and, able to look after children.
  • Previous medical history will not be shared with us. The GP will provide us with recommendations and let us know of any reasons that may affect you becoming a foster carer.
  • We’ll also need to undertake a check with your local authority to ensure that you aren't known to social services for any reason that may compromise your application.
