World Mental Health Day

8th October, 2025

Every year on 10th October, people all over the world come together to talk about something that affects all of us - mental health. World Mental Health Day is a time to raise awareness, share stories, and remind ourselves, and each other, that looking after our minds is just as important as looking after our bodies.

For those involved in foster care - whether you're a social worker, foster carer, or young person in foster care, taking care of our mental health is essential.

Why is World Mental Health Day important in foster care?

For children and young people

Foster care is full of love and warmth, but it also comes with challenges that can take a toll on people’s wellbeing.

Many children in care have faced trauma, loss, or unexpected change. This can cause mental health struggles that we can’t always see.

World Mental Health Day is a chance to:

  • Remind young people that their feelings are valid and important.
  • Encourage environments where it’s safe to talk about how you’re really doing.
  • Access our support services.

Even simple things like asking “How are you feeling today?” and truly listening can make a world of difference.

For foster carers

Foster carers do an incredible role. They open their hearts and homes to children who need safety and stability. But caring for someone else, especially a child who’s been through a lot, can be emotionally intense.

Foster carers often put others’ needs ahead of their own, but it’s important to remember self-care is just as important. World Mental Health Day is a reminder that:

  • Foster carers deserve support too, never be afraid to ask.
  • It’s okay to ask for help.
  • Looking after your mental health makes you a better carer.

Let’s normalise conversations about burnout, stress, and how to recharge without feeling guilty!

For the professionals involved in care planning

Social workers, therapists, youth workers, and anyone else involved in foster care all do amazing work. But the foster care system can be emotionally heavy. Dealing with complex cases and big emotions can be very difficult.

World Mental Health Day is a great time to:

  • Reflect on your own mental wellbeing.
  • Access the resources you need.
  • Make space for team check-ins and peer support.

World Mental Health Day is all about being honest with yourself and others, being kind, and being there for one another.

So, whether you’re a young person navigating day to day life, a foster carer juggling a million things, or a professional supporting others, take care of your mental health!
Let’s keep building a foster care community where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
