World Book Day

3rd March, 2022

By Fostering Support Worker, Alison Fisher

No matter what situations we face with our children and young people, there is always a book which can help. Whether it’s a reference book to help us to understand more about the meaning behind the behaviours we are seeing or a story book to help a child to try to make sense of their own big feelings, there is a lending library of resources in our offices at our foster carer’s disposal.

One of my favourite books to read with younger children is “The Invisible String” by Patrice Karst. In the book, a mum teaches her twins about the invisible strings which connect us to those we love. The children gain comfort and security by learning to understand that we will always have a connection to the people we love, no matter where they are, near or far.

It is a great book to help foster children who have had to struggle with separation, be it from birth family, carers or siblings. It is also useful for foster carer’s own children when foster siblings move on and can be helpful for children experiencing bereavement.
There is also an associated workbook available filled with ideas for creative activities to build connection.

If you are a foster carer with Excel Fostering, we’d love to hear your own suggestions for great books that have helped you and/or the the children you care for.
